Our Kids Are In Danger: Some (few) school districts are attempting to shift the paradigm
“In these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunities of an education. Such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right that must be made available on equal terms.”
– Chief Justice Earl Warren, Brown v. Board of Education (1954)
As there is a small shift in the educational paradigm from punitive to restorative, many children of Color and those with Exceptionalities are at still being suspended, expelled, and removed form the ‘traditional’ classroom. If Chief Justice Earl Warren gleaned that the denial of the opportunities of an education in 1954, why then has so little has changed since 1954?
“Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be”
– Dr. Rita Pierson, Educator
A child cannot be taught by anyone who despises him, and a child cannot afford to be fooled.
– James Baldwin
Listen to the MUSTN’TS, child.
Listen to the DON’TS
Listen to the SHOULDN’TS
The IMPOSSIBLES, the WON’TS
Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me-
Anything can happen, child,
ANYTHING can be.”
– Shel Silverstein
